Glossary :

TechView• Features and Benefits •

Gender Specific : Individually tailored to the specific needs of each segment of running population : Female Runner’s Needs : Women have a wider pelvis than men, which causes them to pronate more when their feet land. Additionally, less muscle mass and softer connective tissue increase the speed at which the ankle rolls inward. By making the soles more flexible with more pronounced flex grooves, and the outside heel more rounded, a softer landing will occur, slowing the inward roll of the ankle, producing a more desired result for the female runner : Male Runner’s Needs : Since men are generally heavier than women, their running shoes must be able to absorb greater impact. Running shoe soles with inadequate width can lead to a feeling of insecurity. Therefore, Mizuno has introduced a wider, slightly flared sole, increasing the landing area in the running shoes specifically designed for men. The result is a more stable and secure run.
Nike Free : It simulates barefoot running while wearing a shoe. As this shoe allows the muscles in the foot to gain strength by providing less constriction, runners are advised to gradually break into the shoe rather than immediately running long distances as to prevent muscle cramps and other discomforts.
Nike Plus : A pocket under the sockliner for secure placement of Nike+ sensor. Connected to Nike Sportband or Apple iPod Series for on screen display of : Information on time, distance, calories burned and pace; real-time audible feedback also is provided through headphones.

Adaptive Fit : Customizable internal sleeve system that wraps under the arch and around the midfoot for increased arch support and a dynamic fit. With floating heel clip to provides additional stability.
Dynamic Fit System : Made up of ‘fingers' of soft material that wrap the midfoot and arch for a glove-like fit for an unparallel comfort.
Flywire™ : Is a thread, composed of Vectran, and developed by Nike, used in the upper of a shoe. The goal of Flywire is to minimize weight and maximize support.
Heel Support Clip : A floating heel-support clip that helps keep the back of the foot from rolling inward or outward upon landing.
Inner Sleeve : To provide a plush comfort and glove-like fit.
Inner Sleeve, Notched : Inner lining construction that has been designed to enhance comfort and fit.
Last, Strobel : The upper is attached to a thin material that is patterned on the shape or silhouette of the midsole. Traditional strobel lasts use a thin cloth material, while newer variations use a thin sheet of EVA for a more cushioned feel.
Last, Phylon™ Strobel : The shoe's upper is stitched to a full-length Phylon, for enhanced cushioning and a soft underfoot feel.
Last, Nike Rideliner : A full length strobel last construction that is composed of a soft polyurethane foam for direct cushioning under foot.
Last, Slip : Boot-like upper constructiont is glued to the midsole to increase flexibility and decrease weight.
Nanoply : A seamless, wafer-thin material which hold the foot in specific areas while maintaining excellent breathability.
Mesh, Modified : Modified mesh with a inner sleeve that hugs the foot for a dynamic, sock-like feel.
Mesh, Open : With synthetic overlays to provide lightweight, smooth irritation free environment which being supportive and breathable.
Mesh, Seamless : With synthetic overlays to provide lightweight, supportive and breathable upper.
Mesh, Seamless Stretchy : An engineered smealess upper with laser-perforated design with stretchy mesh innersleeve to provide a supportive, skin-like fit that moves with each stride.
Midfoot Strap : Arch support that wraps around the foot for a snug, secure fit while poviding additional support.
Off-center Lacing : Asymmetrical lacing system for a more secure fit and reduce irritation.
Sockliner, Dual-layer Ortholite : Insert with Fitsole geometry sits underfoot and provides additional cushioning and comfort.
Sockliner, EVA : Ethylene vinyl acetate : For great step-in and motion comfort.
Sockliner, Fitsole : Engineered for under foot cushioning and molds to the shape of the foot for greater fit.
Sockliner, Molded : Underfoot inserts which are molded based on the curvature of the foot for a closer fit, to provides additional cushioning and comfort.
Sockliner, Tri-Density : Underfoot inserts which provides additional cushioning and comfort.

Air® : Those little bags are based on the following formula: Cu=U+CG (Cushioning equals urethane bags filled with compressed gas). Maybe it's not E=MC², but it will do more for your feet than Einstein ever did. It says that because the gas molecules are larger than the pores in the urethane membrane, air can't escape. The result is our light, protective cushioning.
Air®, Max : It's just what it sounds like: maximum cushioning. Through blow-molding, more pressurized gas can be put inside even bigger air bags. The bigger the Air-Sole unit, the less traditional cushioning material is needed. More cushioning, less weight. You do the math.
Air®, Zoom : Two layers of nylon fabric, joined by densely packed fibers, are sealed inside polyurethane. The unit is inflated; pushing apart the fabric and creating tension on the fibers. What does that mean? Zoom Air works by using stress of the shoe's wearer, absorbing it, and refracting the same stress which helps the Zoom insert retain its shape and buoyancy, allowing for quick responsiveness in performance venues, the result is a low-to-the-ground, hyper-responsive speed cushioning you can feel. And it does it in less space than other Air-Sole units.
Arch Bridge : A gender-specific mid-foot component helps smooth the transition through propulsion.
Cuboid Pod : An extra foam pod placed in the lateral side of the sole units, helps guiding the foot during the gait.
Cushlon® : Nike's unique mid-sole foam which will provides a firmer road feel that delivers plush, resilient cushioning.
Cushlon® LT : A responsive lightweight midsole foam that delivers plush and resilient cushioning.
Cushlon® ST : Cradles the foot for support and cushioning that’s both plush and resilient.
Cush Pad : Located at the bottom lateral heel. A gender-specific highly decoupled unit which reduces shock at impact and reduces the degree and rate of pronation.
Dual-density Polyurethane/Phylon : Simpler than it sounds. Mid-sole that are harder where you need them to be (that's the polyurethane part), softer and lighter where you don't (that's the Phylon).
Dynamic Support : An innovative mid-sole architecture system that adapts to a runner's gait with each step.
Free Sipes : A gender-specific flex grooves midsole cut to produced a barefoot-like flexibility while maintaining stability.
Injected Uni-Sole : Carrier construction sets the Nike LunarLite foam under additional tension providing a responsive ride and additional stability.
Fit Frame : Located on the medial, external heel to provides additional heel support.
Interlocking PU/Phylon mid-sole : Less geeky than it sounds. Merely a combination mid-sole that gives you the best of both worlds. Firm PU in the heel provides a good base for those uneven trails. Phylon (Nike's own EVA material) from the mid-foot to the toe supplies lightweight cushioning. Less filling. Rides great.
Lunar Lite™ Foam : Introduce by Nike in 2008, the Lunar foam has it’s roots from NASA’s space shuttles. Lunarlite foam distributes impact more evenly across the foot. Moreover Lunarlite foam’s “pillow-like” softness not only provides superior cushioning but significant energy return.
Lunar Lite™ System : Composed of a LunarLite foam core bonded to a Phylon carrier, designed to enhance cushioning with increased energy return.
Lunarlon™ : Delivers a soft yet resilient bouncy midsole material.
Lunarlon™ System : Formerly know as Lunarlite, Composed of a LunarLite foam core bonded to a Phylon carrier, designed to enhance cushioning with increased energy return.
Phylon™ : Originally used in dolls, it is a heated and compressed EVA foam cushioning compound that is light, resilient and capable of giving a soft, smooth ride. As a bonus, it is non-yellowing and impervious to attack from water and microbial. What kind of dolls were they?
Phylite™ : Nike's lightweight mid-sole material designed for a resilient ride with enough durability to double as an out-sole.
Phylite™ Carrier : Bonded to LunarLite foam for a smoother transition at heel strike and to moderate pronation.
Segmented medial post : Located in the midfoot area of the medial side, made of a denser two-piece foam unit to reduces excess pronation.
Transtarsal Flex Grooves : Deep cuts flex grooves which runs diagonally under the midfoot area for increased flexibility and mobility to increase foot strength.
TPU : Thermoplastic Urethane : It can be fine-tuned for optimal stiffness and is used to make stabilizing plates.
TPU Shank : Located at the bottom of the midfoot designed to improve heel to toe transition.

TechView.Outsole• Outsole •

Blown Rubber : Is lightweight and flexible. It provides added cushioning while maintaining durability and a smooth ride.
BRS 1000™ : A highly durable carbon rubber we invented for use in out-soles. BRS stands for Blue Ribbon Sports, which was our name before we came up with Nike. The tie-in? Both BRS and Nike last ... and last...
Duralon™ : Delivers additional cushioning to the forefoot, which then enables a smooth toe-off. It is very soft, so it might not be as durable as other out-sole materials depending on the surface on which the shoes are worn. It is typically found in the forefoot area of a running shoe, so the durability doesn't affect the overall life of the shoe itself.
Waffle Fill™ : Rubber sole compound for enhanced traction.
Waffle Lug : Built into the Phylite's outsole, to increased cushioning upon impact.
